For the TreeBrothers
To the many men who are rising to the call of a balanced world and a future that reflects the current shift towards ecological care, we thank you and we need you. This is no small task.
The cultural identity, mindset, perspectives, and assumptions that we have all inherited position us as one above the other as sexes and all above nature as a species. Both positions are unreal, untrue agonies that allow separation and dislocation to perpetuate radical disrespect, violence, subjugation, ecological destruction and embedded, multifaceted, multidimensional heartbreak. Here we all stand encoded with some version of a theme of this normalized, intolerable conditioning.
And, given that these are fundamental untruths that have severed us away from the subtle nature of ourselves, we also find ourselves at the threshold of an extraordinary evolution. It's time to try something different; something completely different, and that is a game that we get to discover as we create it together on our way back home to ourselves.
Can we shift from an unconsciously Patriarchal world that values growth, money, expansion and power above all else, to a balanced world where feminine values of care, mutuality, love, relationship and the protection of all life course-correct us towards ways of being and doing that start consciously protecting the future of the natural world and all generations to come? We get to try.
How? Certainly, men cannot reinstate the Feminine Principle in this world, although you can open to embodying it in your selves as we try to do the same. What you can do, and do powerfully, is choose to recognize how and where you unconsciously or consciously uphold the inherited currency of superiority, and be prepared to drop with us into the unchartered next stage of personal and collective humility and rediscovery.
You can hold space for radical change that wears a woman's face. You can sit back and be a presence within which your partner, your daughter, your Mother, your female colleagues feel utterly safe and celebrated to step further forward with the fullness of themselves beside you. You can listen more deeply, respect more completely, understand the depth to which we have been conditioned away from ourselves and feel from the truest place you can touch within yourself, who and what women really are. Be honest with yourself. Drop through the false layers of immediate conditioning and dare to find what's deeply true underneath.
You can apologize - not as some shamefaced wretch, but as a shining being willing to step fully into total personal responsibility for the mindset that you inherited and the evolution that you can now choose. As a man alive right now, your awakening into reverence for all things alive and sacred - including yourself, including women and including nature - is as critical, crucial, vital and beautiful as woman-kind's awakening to the truth of our own nature and our unwillingness to accept our repression one moment longer.
The reality is that this is going to be clunky. Men still stone women to death, burn them, rape them, use and abuse them, treat them as second or third class citizens without rights over their choices, their bodies or their dreams in countries all over the world and it has been normalized. That very present and fierce subjugation exists loud and proud, right here and now in the collective unconscious and conscious psyche of women around this planet.
That treatment is reflected in the technologies created to shred trees as they stand, poison underground water forever as we frack our future health away, drill, mine, bomb, trash and increasingly cripple the life support system of Gaia whilst expecting her to feed, clothe, house and provide for us all, somehow indefinitely. And she is letting us know that those staggeringly blessed days of unconscious consumption are over. Either we wake up, grow up and mature into a species that lives with great respect for the natural world that affords us life, or we're done.
Personally, I'm not done with done. I have no idea whether we'll make it, but increasingly I see the vast privilege of participating in this great experiment called life as a shared journey of evolution that has its own trajectory and purpose. Within that journey, the imbalanced lie of patriarchy gets to dissolve into the emergence of humility and reverence for life as the Feminine Principle rises and takes Her throne once more. That evolution is as intensely sacred, beautiful, intimate, glorious, relevant and vital as any colossal shift we can be lucky enough to incarnate into and live through, and it is now.
So whilst we all tend to cling on to what we know and stay loyal to the teachings and experience of those who have gone before, we stand at a threshold and we need to throw the old compass away. More of the same is not going to solve the global crisis. If we want to survive, it's time to bow to the vast intelligence of the cosmos, to the infinite creativity of life, to the sacredness of nature, to the unknown and the yet to be felt. It's time to bow to the Divine Feminine that provides the womb of creation and ask Her to show us how to live so that all life thrives. That is what She has done for billions of years, that is what She knows how to do and She is infinitely creative. We are part of her, so we are too.
To the men. We need your love, your deep presence, your respect and your listening. We need your greatness in humility and your integrity in spades. We need you to honour our process of emergence, our space for healing and our clunkiness as we find ourselves. We need you to believe that anything is possible, that humanity can awaken and transform and to find yourself within that transformation.
We need your support - direct financial support for the trees, philanthropic support for the TreeSisters organisation if you want to underpin a global women's movement on behalf of the trees. We need you to spread the word to those that you love and to those who are longing to find sanity amongst the growing chaos. But above all, we ask that you close your eyes, feel your heart and give thanks to the one that has given you everything that you love, you need and you are, and then ask yourself how you can start to contribute your gifts in this lifetime, to Her.
